Australian’s all let us rejoice!
Happy Australia Day!
My first Australia Day in London! I am so excited and proud to be from the sunnier side. It’s really strange; you come to the UK and feel so passionate about your home country. I never appreciated Australia as much as I do now. Antipodeans really stick together and constantly poke fun at the English for having poles stuck up their nether regions. That said the British are some of the funniest people I've ever met (but don’t tell my boss I said that…)
Last night we had the inspired idea of making some tradition Aussie tucker – lamingtons. Claire and I ran excitedly up to our local Sainsbury’s on the hunt for sponge cake. Um hello? No plain sponge to be seen. In a fluster we headed to our next and more expensive supermarket Waitrose where we found some trifle sponge. We bought 6 packs, some cocoa, icing sugar and coconut and headed home, feeling very proud of ourselves. After a glass or two of red and some Baileys on ice we proceeded to ‘get messy’ in the kitchen, whipping up a batch of lammies. We only ended up making half the batch cos we rapidly lost interest. This morning I sent a joint email around the department to let everyone know what special day it was and what delights we had in store. No one has had food poisoning yet so I’m guessing they went down well!
We are off tonight to ‘do Fulham’. We will undoubtedly have some trouble getting in, as the word is that the pubs are full by lunchtime with Aussies taking rostered days off just to celebrate. A friendly word in Gustav’s ear and we should at least get into Belushis. I will fill ya’ll in tomorrow on the nights outcome.
A short update – Paris was simply marvellous with Mumsi, fine food, finer men, who can complain? No Johnny sightings but I have not given up hope yet. We also spent the week visiting friends and relatives who spoilt us rotten. Aren’t we lucky? And next weekend it's Helsinki for pampering in Paradise (besides the minus degree weather) so excited!
